The dress, and the layer that decides it

Four dresses and four tops drafted to work under a coat or on their own, from a buttoned sweater dress to a lace-trim tee that disappears at the shoulder.

Read the rail in two halves

Dresses on a natural waist above, close-cut tops below, in the same olive, chalk and camel.

The winter test

Worn over, under and alone

Every piece is worn three ways for a full day before a pattern is approved. If a top bunches under a coat or a dress catches on a knit, it is not finished.

A dress is only half the outfit

Our tops are cut with a slim body and a generous armhole, so they disappear under a coat without a bulge at the shoulder, and the sleeve finishes where a cuff shows. The dresses are cut on a natural waist with enough room through the hip to sit and stand without a readjustment. Each style is worn over and under the other pieces on the rail before it is approved, because a wardrobe is a system rather than a list.

The close-up: cable, plaid, velour

A cable knit that keeps its definition after washing, a plaid cotton that holds its check across the seam, and a velour with enough weight to fall rather than cling. All three are photographed flat and on the body, in daylight and under warm light.
